This tool calculates the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and Flesch Reading Ease scores, standard, publicly published readability formulas originally developed by Rudolf Flesch and later adapted by J. Peter Kincaid and colleagues. Syllable counts are estimated using a common heuristic and may differ slightly from a manual count. The age category shown is matched from the grade level using commonly used children's publishing conventions (picture book, early reader, chapter book, middle grade, young adult); exact age ranges can vary by publisher. These are mathematical estimates based on sentence and word length, not a substitute for editorial judgment.
